# Office Cleaning Checklist: Daily, Weekly and Monthly Tasks

An office cleaning checklist by frequency: every visit, weekly, monthly and yearly tasks, area by area, for writing or checking a cleaning scope.

An office cleaning schedule works in four layers. Every visit covers washrooms, kitchen surfaces, high-touch points, garbage and recycling, and floors in the main traffic areas. Weekly adds full vacuuming, interior glass, dusting and washroom walls. Monthly adds baseboards, vents, high dusting and doors. Once or twice a year covers carpet cleaning, hard-floor deep scrubbing and interior windows. Frequency should follow traffic and headcount, not only square footage. It is the layout Klein's uses for offices in Hamilton and Halton.

This is a typical custodial layout written by Klein's, not an official standard. A real scope is written for a real building after a walk-through.

## How many times a week should an office be cleaned?

It depends on people and use more than floor area. A small office with a handful of staff and few visitors is often fine with one or two visits a week. Offices with a public reception, client washrooms or a busy shared kitchen usually need three to five evenings a week, because those rooms cannot go several days. The heavy "every visit" column is what drives the number.

## Should the touch points be disinfected?

Where there is a reason to, such as cold and flu season or a shared-equipment workplace, the touch points in the "every visit" row are the ones to disinfect, after they are cleaned. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety's [touch point procedure](https://www.ccohs.ca/infectious-diseases/disinfect-touchpoints) starts by making sure the surface is visibly clean, and states: "Do not disinfect a visibly soiled surface."
