Which schedule fits which household?
| Household | Suggested schedule | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Family with young children | Weekly | Kitchens, bathrooms and floors get used hard every day |
| Dogs or cats that shed | Weekly or every two weeks | Hair and dander build up on floors and soft furniture within days |
| Someone with asthma or allergies | Weekly | Health Canada advises frequent vacuuming and damp dusting to reduce dust exposure |
| Busy couple or small family | Every two weeks | The most common balance of standard and cost |
| One or two tidy adults | Monthly | Enough to catch bathrooms, kitchen and floors properly if you keep up day to day |
The schedules are Klein's own recommendation from experience, not a standard from any authority.
Does cleaning more often help with allergies?
Health Canada says dust mites live in "beds, carpets, furniture, plush children's toys, and anywhere that dust accumulates", and that dust and mites can aggravate conditions such as asthma. Its advice to reduce exposure includes cleaning floors and surfaces "with a damp mop or cloth" and vacuuming carpets and soft furnishings frequently, ideally with a HEPA-filter vacuum (Health Canada, dust and dust mites). A weekly visit is the practical way to keep to that.
Is monthly cleaning worth it?
Yes, if you understand what it is. A monthly visit does a thorough job of the kitchen, bathrooms and floors, but four weeks is long enough for soap scum, stovetop grease and dust to build up, so each monthly visit takes longer than an every-two-weeks one. For some homes the monthly and every-two-weeks prices end up closer than expected.
What about the jobs no schedule catches?
Inside the oven and fridge, baseboards, vents, blinds and grout build up slowly whatever the schedule. Either rotate one of them into each regular visit, or book a deep clean once or twice a year. Carpets are on their own cycle: see how often to clean carpets.
Can the schedule change?
It should, when life does: a new baby, a new dog, a busy season at work. Klein's regular house cleaning is weekly, every two weeks or monthly, and it is easier to start more often and scale back than the other way round.
